When is it time to change your fixtures? Anytime you want to modernize or take advantage of a new design that comes out. There are also cases where you can change a fixture to a water saving design that will actually pay for itself. New fixtures should last a long time if chosen properly and will only need to be changed for mordenezation or increased efficiency.

We have many fixtures in our market that will not last, and is important to understand why.

Enameled Steel fixtures have a good finish with little maintenance but will crack over a period of time. The steel will flex or rust causing the porcelain to crack or flake off exposing the steel to further corrosion.

Fiberglass is not as impervious to stains and requires periodic waxing to maintain a luster. There lower cost is what makes them attractive.

Acrylic is a little more dense than Fiberglass providing a better finish for a longer period of time and worth the extra cost.

Molded Stone made of composite material or plastic is a very durable product but does not have the luster or shine of other materials. Waxing helps but is designed for the stone look.

Porcelain Cast Iron is extremely durable and very low maintenance. It comes in many colors with a high luster. They also have a molded backing that is like Cast Iron but lighter weight and so far is working well.

Vitreous China compared to any other material is the most durable, highest luster, and very low maintenance. It is practically scratch resistance.

Stainless Steel is usually used on kitchen sinks and comes in different grades, thickness, and finishes. The higher grades of stainless are better, however the thickness is better when the number is lower. Finishes have varying degrees of luster all the way up to a mirror finish, although the mirror finish looks the best when put in and is the most costly is very hard to maintain the original finish and unless you want to have a high maintenance sink is not recommended.

Use and Care of fixtures depends upon type and water quality, Automotive paste wax for anything other than porcelain and china which do not need it is great for longevity and looks.
