Faucets manufactured today are for the most part washerless and come in a wide range of styles and operation.

OPERATION

Faucets come in single handle controlling temperature and volume through a handle settings

Two handle with each side controlling hot or cold

Infrared where flow and temperature are controlled through close proximity of you or your hands to the faucet.

They have tub & shower valves that are pressure balanced which will keep the water flowing at the temperature that you have set no matter if someone else turns on the water in the house.

Most valves are washerless now which does not mean that they will never need repair, but will result in a more effective and long lasting repair when the time comes.

LONGEVITY of faucets primarily depend on the materials they are made of, not only the faucet but the control mechanisms themselves.

Brass faucets are usually the most durable and longest lasting.

Stainless Steel is also a good choice but you will have to be careful in the quality.

They also use an alloy which is then plated to help withstand corrosion and provide a nice finish. These tend to be less expensive but will not last as long as the other two.

Plastic Faucets are the lowest cost and shortest lived. The expansion and contraction with the strength of the plastic itself leaves this type as a poor choice.

You can not always tell by the looks of the faucets either what type that it is. With the electroplating that is used today in finishes of faucets they may look good until a couple years down the road.

FINISHES are just about endless in the color you may want. The process of electroplating and powder coating give you a variety of colors from chrome, gold, silver, polished brass, nickel, white , bone, red, black, and combinations of each the choices are overwhelming. The cost is usually higher for anything other than chrome. Polished brass is a good alternative for the gold look if you want to keep costs down.

STYLES today in faucets are combining good looks with functionality. They have kitchen and lavatory faucets with high spouts, long spouts, pull out spouts, and remote spouts.
